    Who wouldn’t want to build robots for mass production to the world?  As a Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer for the Global Operations team, you will use your technical expertise to specify and mature the production test processes for our newest robotic products with the latest in complex commercial technologies.  You will report to the Senior Manager, Technical Operations as a lead test engineer (LTE) working in early-design, cross-functional teams of US Engineering/Technology Organization, Bedford and Far East Operations and IT professionals to deliver the best production test features to our high-volume Far East contract manufacturing partners and speed our time-to-market.  This LTE will also be called upon to collaborate on test methodologies for next generation robot components/sensors and drive continual improvement in test yields and cost reduction efforts.

    Essential Functions/ Job Duties

    This LTE is responsible for specifying production test processes.  This responsibility includes all the following tasks:

    • Writing Manufacturing Test Strategies (MTSs): budget estimates for the test process
    • Writing Production Line Test Specifications (PLTSs): Test Flow Charts with pass/fail criterion for PCBA-, component-, assembly- and robot-level test/calibration stations on the production line
    • Writing Test Station Specifications (TSSs) to document the requirements of selected programming, calibration and test stations
    • Overseeing development of all manufacturing test stations and documentation from contract manufacturers, iRobot-internal and 3rd party suppliers
    • Providing actual cost, schedule, test coverage and yield statistics throughout the development process to measure against established project budgets
    • Working with Engineering to develop proof-of-concept test methodologies
    • Working with Far East team members to aid in implementing the test processes that you have specified
    • Reviewing pre-production test results and yields to assess production readiness
    • Providing technical support for product-specific issues at the CMs and suppliers
    • Performing failure analysis and working with cross-functional teams to drive product, process and test corrective actions as required
    • Working with other Operations, Engineering and Tech Organization team members to drive cost-reduction and yield-improvement efforts
    • Domestic and International Travel: 2-5 trips each year, 1-2 weeks each trip (approximately 4 to 20%) to iRobot offices, contract manufacturers and suppliers



    Must have:

    • BSEE, BSME or equivalent required
    • 3+ years’ experience in electrical and mechanical testing
    • Familiarity with the basic concepts, practices and methodologies within Test Engineering including:
      • Test Requirements Documentation
      • Design for Testability (electrical and mechanical)
      • Test Capacity Modeling
      • Project Cost Estimation
    • Proven ability to prioritize multiple tasks/projects in a high-paced environment
    • Excellent written/oral communication and organizational skills
    • Proven record of testing basic robotic components such as brushed/brushless motors, IR LEDs and Hall Effect sensors
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Tools: Word, Excel, Visio, Project & PowerPoint
    • Proven proficiency with enterprise systems for BOM Management and corporate purchasing
    • The ability to obtain a China entry visa


    • MSEE, MSME or equivalent
    • 10+ years’ experience in electrical and mechanical testing
    • Proven track record of successfully creating new test processes and implementing enhancements to existing test projects
    • Proven record of testing advanced robotic components such as imagers, gyroscopes, accelerometers and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth ICs
    • Experience working with contract manufacturers
    • Experience working with Far East manufacturing
    • Experience working with Windows and Linux-based test stations
    • Experience working with LabVIEW programming
    • Experience working with Python programming
    • Experience working with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems (such as Windchill)
    • Experience working with software revision control systems (such as SVN)
    • Experience working with PCBA design tools (such as Altium)
    • Experience working with mechanical modeling tools (such as Pro/E)
    • Experience working with SPC/data analysis tools (such as Minitab)
    • Experience working with database schema creation tools (such as MySQL Workbench)
    • Experience working with database querying tools (such as SQL Developer)
